Well, today my Hubby/Enabler drove me to the Antique Rose Emporium. It had been a while since our last visit and on the same road we came across Independence Guns and Ammo so I told him we could stop there first and brose around, I figured he deserved it for all he does to help me with my roses. He throughly, enjoyed it! It is a great place with lots of items instock.
At ARE I picked up Westerland, Amazone, and Francis Dubrieul. Westerland and Amazone are new to me, Francis Durieul is a replacement, just love its color and I have used it some in crosses, lots of good pollen.
All, in all a great day for both of us.
Hi Joan,
Congratulations on your successful hunt for roses! Which ‘Amazone’ did you get? There are 4 listed on HMF.
On rose outings with my wife, I like to combine the time seeing museums or other historical items of interest.
Win-win outings are the best kind!

Did not know there were that many Amazone roses. The info card said it was a seedling of Safrano, which I have grown. Both were blooming side by side but the bloom form on Amazone was a bit better. ARE had all the large roses grouped by color, which I thought was very nice. I went with the intention of getting Isabella Sprunt, but when I saw them blooming side by side thought that Amazone was better.
If you have never been to ARE the location at Brenham I think is prettier than the one in San Antonio. The landscaping is really nice with lots of perennials and companion plants mixed in with the roses and set among some old houses, out-buildings and even an old church, which is used as a meeting room. They give you lots of ideas about how to landscape with roses especially climbers.
Also, there are several historical sites nearby. I’m thinking of checking out Washington-on-the-Brazos today. My hubby is a “Naturalized” Texan and took Iowa history so I am attempting to teach him Texas History.
And don’t forget the best of all, the Blue Bell ice cream creamery in Brenham. Just love ARE, go there every Spring.
