I posted photos I took yesterday showing (or, at least trying to show) why I’ve always loved this bloom. It is saturated orange with a true bicolor, white reverse, on a very healthy (here), vigorous plant. With age and cool temps, it “paints” with a purple wash, like most of the deeper russet roses do, while maintaining the brilliant orange toward the center of the petals. It also makes healthy, odd colored babies. Definitely worth a look! Kim
I was looking at Betty Jacobs’ other roses. Winter Magic seems like a rose that’s relevant to Rob’s previous post asking about crossing yellows with purples. Rise 'n Shine crossed with Blue Nile to get…
Silvery lavender gray with intense lemon fragrance and excellent form. It also sported to Cafe Ole, a russet, but both throw each other’s flowers repeatedly. I grew Autumn Magic, also. Very bright flower with gorgeous sepals. Too bad it faded to “ugly” like Confetti did in my climate.
Rise’n Shine is easy to get. Its sister, 1-72-1 will give more saturated colors with the same health potential. Blue Nile is not one of my first choices for breeding due to the long lag between flushes of bloom and its proclivity to black spot. Charles de Gaulle is far better as a mauve HT in these parts with more reliable bloom and health. Perhaps Neptune or something more resistant in your climate might produce better breeders? I wouldn’t try any of Ralph’s mauve minis because they’re all based on Angel Farts and we all know what that dawg does.
With MANY of these roses, it’s boiled down to posting for cuttings on HMF and even, perhaps, working a little outside the box and contacting anyone you know who many know those who grow them. Kim
I’m not surprised her Church Mouse is no longer around. That thing was far more difficult to keep alive than any Hulthemia, or even Ralph’s Dahlia Rose. After the third one, I quit trying. Didn’t matter what I did for it, they just died. Kim
Kim,
Great pictures. I can’t wait to start using ST next season. It’s nice that it passes on good health as well.
Joe,
Winter Magic sure has a pretty color.
Hmmm…I have both Winter Magic and Rise n Shine. I see a cross coming next spring!
No, not together as Winter Magic is already half Rise’n Shine. What other really decent mauve roses do you grow? Are there any other good yellow minis in your garden? At least (hopefully better) than Rise’n Shine? The worst down side of Rise’n Shine here is its passing on whites and pastel colors. If you want saturated, deep colors, that isn’t the way to go. If you want washed out colors, it will give you those all day long. Cal Poly will give deeper colors as will Golden Gardens. They’re just Rise’n Shine’s sister, bred with Gold Badge. If you want to reinforce the mauve in Winter Magic, what other non Angel Face mauves do you grow, which, hopefully, don’t also include Blue Nile? Might as well go for vigor, purple and health. Kim
I have grown Twilight Zone, not the new one but the one hybridized by Williams in '96. Although it was not terribly healthy for me it did produce an OP seedling this spring that is a pretty dusty mauve with a cream reverse. The seedling seems pretty healthy and will be used next year with perhaps another of my seedlings from a Heritage X Outta the Blue cross. Would also like to try it with About Face.
Glad to see someone else talking about using Winter Magic. WM does pretty well here in Des Moines, IA. It does get BS without spraying but it gets through the winter (zone 5b) without too much damage. The color is really nice. I have one plant in full sun and one with afternoon shade (right on the east side of the house) and they do equally well with the afternoon shaded plant producing some excellent silver coloring. Nice fragrance too. Sets a descent amount of OP hips. I’m planning on using it with a few healthy (and hardy) varieties next year.
I also have Violet Mist which in my garden is slightly more healthy in my garden. It is more upright, with more blooms than WM. It is Lagerfeld X Ernie (both of which I have and do well despite having Angel Face and/or Blue Nile in the backgound). I used it several times as a seed parent this year and got hips harvested with Fourth of July, Frontenac, Morden Sunrise and Prairie Lass as pollen donors so we’ll see if I can get anything with them. Last year I got a ton of seeds from the OPs I collected just never got around to grow them out - think they are at the bottom of the fridge still.
I was thinking that I will be using both varieties next year just to compare how each one does. To reinforce the mauve as Kim suggests, I think I have some pretty good choices to use - Stephen’s Big Purple, Night Owl, Blue Moon (thornlessness), Escapade, Lauren, Sweet Nothings, Lilac Charm, and Heinrich Karsch. Grey Dawn would be fun to use just to see what color I can get - not sure about the quality of plant. Midnight Blue is on the list for this year too.
I really need to get Cal Poly or some other yellow mini but I do have Rise ‘n’ Shine, Sequoia Gold, Sweet Diana and 1-72-1 to use. I also think I have Sunbeam Koradana but I’m not sure on the identity. I thought I had Golden Angel but it turned out to be an orage-red mini instead. Any one have other suggestions for yellows?
So much to think about now that winter is almost here.
On the tangent of yellows and mauves, is Baby Love a candidate for crossing with mauves?
And does anyone have experience with ‘World War II Memorial’?
Saw a beautiful WWIIM on clearance, but wonder if it wouldn’t have serious health issues in my garden. (They had Angel Face next to it, and she actually looked spectacular in her little pot.)
Hi Philip, great seeing you! There are only three comments about WW II Memorial on HMF, two from CA and one from “Zone 6” and all three say no mildew and only slight black spot. Not that those would be indicative of your potential experience, but they wrote it is like a huge bouquet, always in flower with an amazing scent. There isn’t a lot of information about the lineage, but it may be worth a try. I’ve avoided any of the “Memorial Roses” because I figured they’d probably be “OK”, but not great. The producers would likely use them for the names, thinking they’d sell some, but not as many as they would of those given great names. Kim
Sadly, ‘Show ‘N’ Tell’ defoliates completely from disease in my climate. As such, I have refrained from using it in breeding.
That’s unfortunate Paul. I’ll try pairing it up with something really resistant. Thanks for the info.
I do have Violet Mist too ( it does look very much like Winter Magic and I agree that it blooms more) and Sunny Kordana. Or even Isolde Hit which is a yellow and red striped rose. Other than that I only have Sweet Chariot or Lavender Jewel in mauve minis. But they don’t have as nice a form as WM or VM. I’ll have to do some more research and thinking on it. Maybe something with Yantai? I have that too but that one isn’t a very deep yellow.
