Rugosa X carolina has several hips

I just noticed yesterday that there are at least three open-pollinated hips forming on my hybrid Rosa rugosa X carolina. This should be a triploid hybrid and I expected it to be pretty much sterile; but I guess “Mother Nature” has her own ideas about these things. Now I’m wondering just who the pollen parent might have been…

Rosa davidii and Rosa virginiana were both nearby and in bloom… so they would be my first guesses.

I guess time will tell.

Here’s a link to little more info about the hybrid itself.
