Most of them will be dormant showing various degrees of fall colour. My growing zone is 9b some of the cooler species struggle abit here when we have long periods over 100F. It is amazing how the foliage can differ even amongst siblings, this lot have been very healthy for me this year as I changed my breeding strategy to incorporate more hybrid Musk types into the lines.
Using these doubled Rugosa seed parents have given me an edge when it produces stronger and healthier seedlings, before this, I had terrible trouble trying to keep them alive.
One thing I notice is nobody is selecting for red stems like Therese Bugnet. this is my main goal brighten up a drab rugosa. It is hard but I can now get red stems with white flowers but there is much more work to be done. The white that I have is the earliest posted note read leaves etc
Because I sow Rugosa in early Autumn here, most will hold their foliage over the winter, however once they have a years growth behind them , they do go dormant over the winter months here. I also have some dwarf, very compact rugosa’s now in their 3 yr. One in particular is a Rugosa X Hybrid Multiflora which has remained under 12" high.
The very spindly seedlingsif like mine will have a very poor root system, I disgard these very quickly because you will be fighting to keep them alive.

Sometimes that optimal climate in summer can go into 45 Celsius , we had a few days at 42 Celsius already. Carefree Beauty is a mess as is some of the newer Kordes types, I just feel like getting a shovel and diging them out they look so bad from heat intolerance.
Actually I don’t mind the cold, I can remember skiing in the French alps at 10,700ft and the temperature was -45 Celsius, but I tell you fantastic powder though.
