Royal Edward

I’m looking for opinions on using Royal Edward with mininatures in hopes of increasing hardiness and disease reistance in minis. RE is 18" x 2’ which is good, it repeats, is reportedly disease resistant and hardy to zone 3b. All pluses. Looking at parentage I like that it has R. Kordesii (75%), Red Dawn and Suzanne…all pluses. On the negative side it has Doubloons and the health issues associated with it. I understand that Zeus is a bit healthier. Any thoughts on going this route?

I just came across this rose on HMF today. Canadian roses are quite widely available in Finland but I had never heard of this one before. Does it work as seed parent?

This was the first year for Royal Edward in my garden and it wasn’t a good year for it. It was clean early on but it developed Black spot and lost at leats 70% of it’s leaves later in the summer. That doesn’t bode well for it because it was a light year for both black spot and spot anthracnose here this year, so I suspect it’ll be worse in a bad year. I would reccomend Petit Pink as a Minuture that has good disease resisance, it also was aquired this year and was much cleaner. I have grown OP seedlings of it but I can’t say how well it is to work with in crosses.

Having grown RE for a couple seasons now I can report that it is nearly disease free in my garden. I’ve used it as a seed parent and have found that it can pass on resistance, increased petal count and nice colors depending on the other parent. It’s listed as hardy to zone 2 so I’m hoping hardiness is passed on as well. Seeds germinate readily. I’ll continue using this one as a breeder.
