of those the following was of particular interest to me.

“The pollen viability and percentage of pollen germination were significantly higher in the hexaploids (30.54%, 34.41%) than the triploids (9.96%, 14.53%).”

I’d heard that chromosome doubling of triploids was one way to coax some fertility out of them, it’s good to see numbers to go with that concept.

Very interesting comparison of triploid and hexaploid Iceberg.

With arguments for polyploidization and against.

By the way Iceberg in certain exposure shows a definite and consistent blush that may be similar to hexaploid one.

Pierre, I don’t know why you would want to double Iceberg, it is pollen fertile and in some specimens of Iceberg very fertile as a seed parent. David Austin has used it as a pollinator on numerous times. As a seed parent I have used it to create these three cultivars.

Iceberg consistently sets hips here, although they’re the absolute favorite of the local tree squirrels. Roemer’s Hip Happy ((Carefree Beauty x seedling of Iceberg) x Iceberg) shows how little one needs to do to it, to get hundreds of seeds from a smallish plant.

On the other hand, there’s a lot of market for plants like Iceberg, and it’s out of patent.

Warren

Iceberg is useless as a parent here as it fully defoliates after first flush, refoliates and repeats defoliating. I quit it 15 years ago.

What I find interesting is polyploidisation and triploid/hexaploid comparison both well covered in this paper.

Stunning is hexaploid Iceberg very poor flower production that is less than 1/3 of triploid.
