R. x pteragonis

Bob,

As was posted earlier, Sequoia Nursery was the last commercial source for ‘Joycie’ anywhere, as far as I know. I will extend the same offer to you that I did for Don: I will propagate my plant this Spring and hopefully by Fall I will have a couple plants I can send you. They won’t be useful as a seed parents for at least two years (pollen yes), but at least you will have them.

Paul

Hooray for Paul Barden: Many thanks for kind offer of Joycie. If she takes a while to get going, all I can say is better late than never. Please let me know what I can do to compensate you for your trouble. Again, can’t thank you enough. Bob Williams

Mr. Barden - you are too kind! Words can’t express my gratitude!

Welcome. Lets hope I can get cuttings to root as effortlessly as in the past! Easy rooting is a trait ‘Joycie’ also seems to pass on to its offspring.

Regards,

Paul

Roger,

The disadvantage with ‘Sequoia Gold’ is that it produces a LOT of seedlings that are very pale in color and that fade to white very quickly. If you grow several hundred from a cross, you will find a few worth keeping but 99.95 are poor color in my experience.

Paul

I meant to say 99.95%

Maybe Golden Gardens, Apricot Sunblaze or Disneyland are better choices for those that cannot find Joycie?

‘Golden Gardens’ is much scarcer than Joycie. I have it and I’m sure Paul does but not sure how many other specimens exist.

It wouldn’t hurt to ask Sequoia in case they have a few left.

I saw it being sold at Heirlooms.

Heirloom? They aren’t listed by HMF as a source. I wonder if it was part of John’s breeding stock? Interesting.

Paul B - does breeding Sequoia Gold with something really dark increase the chances of producing decently colored offspring?

It will improve the odds Adair, yes…but you will still have to weed out a lot of very pale seedlings. Golden Gardens, as Robert pointed out, is also a good yellow breeder to consider.

Paul

Heirlooms is NEVER consistant, Robert. I swing by some days just to get away fromt he mtro and see what they have.

If Heirloom has stuff like 'Golden Gardens’laying around, I wouldn’t complain.
