more on climbers

Johannes,

Hope you don’t mind carry on with Beggeriana or Polstjärnan on your thread. l assume trying to develop climbers, especially hardy (Z2-4) and trying to get repeat is thread fair game.

Thanks Karl for the continuing efforts Beggeriana.

Only want to add as a neophyte eye, l read that Peter Joy (and others), postulate pollen parent was Orleans Rose polyantha (pink) with beggeriana.

This rose does not appear to have the O’Brien’s “hurricane” pinched glass lamp form or colour of Polstjärnan’s hips. Do not believe dog roses have them.

Know pendulina shows up in claimed background of Poppius which is R. reversa = pendulina x spino (grow a couple of young ones) but bares no resemblance to Polstar. Except really hardy. I assume larger pink blooms come from spino parent genes.

Bonjour Riku
I have a Rosa beggeriana nigrescens that I had recived from Loubert many years ago. This is in fact a mislabelled Rosa beggeriana (with white flowers) that I had ordered. It is very hardy in my zone 3b and it is over 6 feet tall. Sadly I have eliminated many suckers last fall! But probably some new suckers will grow this summer. If you are interested to have this plant I could send you some suckers and also some seeds if you want this fall.

Oh mon amie, merci beaucoup … l will gladly take any you can spare, not matter in what shape or size.

I offer reciprocity from my garden stock if suckers available for any of interest. Txs

The thorns l see and location seem similar to Polstjärnan. That bodes well for confirming one parent. Are the hips globular and finish as black?

It is noted, and thank you for your offer Riku!
If I remember well the fruits are globular and red, but I am not sure if they turn black. I will can confirm that, this fall.

Below excerpt from" Roses Biblio" … sounds like a rarity in Canada … hips description mirror white variety ? … wets my appetite

"This rose from the Loubert collection is not listed in the literature either as a variety or as a form of Rosa beggeriana. The description of Rosa beggeriana Schrenk at Rosa of China states the color: “white, rarely pink”, i.e. pink forms have been seen in China.

Colour: Light mauve-pink with a white flower base.

Rose Hips: Red hips turning black-purple, 6 - 10 mm Ø, flattened spherical, rarely ovaloid, with sepals attached.

Growth: Large, overhanging shrub, 1.5 - 3.0 m tall.

Leaves: 5- to 9-pinnate, mid-grey green foliage with pointed, long-oval, mid-serrated leaves.
