I would really appreciate it if some kind hearted soul could find and mail ripe hips of Spanish Rhapsody to me this fall. I have been intrigued with this Buck rose since last year and plan to purchase it this fall for breeding. I always like to try out a few open pollenated seeds of a variety to get a feel for haw well they will germinate and what the seedlings will be like.
I would also be most interested in hearing from anyone who has seedlings from it, either OP or crossed with other roses.
I will be happy to pay for your expense or trade hips from some of my roses.
Randy Hughes, Vancouver WA
Hey, if you can provide a pic of how it looks, I think there is a lost name variety growing at SJHRG that may be ‘Spanish Rhapsody’. It is listed as “stipped buck type”, but I think it may be ‘Spanish Rhapsody’ by reading descriptions. If so, I can send any OP hips when I go harvesting tommorow, that is if it has any. I cannot find a pic of this rose on the net so if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.
There are several Buck roses with stippled colors on the petals. Unfortunately this spring my Spanish Rhapsody was creamed by nature and is only now beginning to look reasonable again. Mountain Music has, IMO, better stippling, but not as interesting a fragrance.
Enrique,
Thanks.
I don’t have any photos of Spanish Rhapsody, but I think there is a photo on helpmefind roses. SR has large double HT-like blooms of orange/pink with stipples
If you find any hips on the one you know of I would be glad to have them and will pay postage or send hips from some of my roses.
I am still interested in finding hips from anyone who has a plant of SR for sure.
Randy
Sorry I can’t help you with the hips this year, Randy. I did order Spanish Rhapsody from Sam Kedam along with 5 other Bucks this year, but it is a baby and doesn’t have any hips. If it were next year, I could help you. By the way did the Schneezwerg plant I sent you help you any this year? Did you get seedlings from the hips I sent? We have finally moved, and what a turmoil we are in with the plants and gardens. Everything is from total scratch, I mean we had woods there. I had to cut my rose plants way back to dig them and transplant them in the terrible 90+ degree heat of this summer. So I don’t have the hips I had hoped for, do have some Schneezwerg hips, and one or two from Blanc double de Cobert, but the rest were green, very green, if they had even formed hips yet when they were pruned and moved. Take care, Joan
Hi Joan,
Yes, I did get a few seedlings from the Schneezwerg seeds you sent, but the Schneezwerg cutting died. I sure appreciated your effort. I’m afraid I got careless this summer in watering and the poor Schneezwerg plant didn’t have enough of a root system to support it when the hot, dry summer came. It was my own fault it perished. I should have been more attentive. Funny that the little seedlings made it but the sucker didn’t. I would have bet the opposite, but I guess I always make time to water my seedlings better than the other roses in my garden.
Hopefully one of the seedlings will be interesting and fertile. I did get one with very shiny foliage, which is very attractive.
Congratulations on your move. I hope you enjoy the new place.Did you get anything from what I sent?

Well, I thought I was getting some seedlings to grow, but very few of them made it, and those that did start, seemed to fizzle. I was really dissapointed in that, I so wanted something from the Ferdnand Pichard crosses. I did share some of your seeds with a friend, so I did not have all of them to start. Why would some seedlings make it and others, treated the same way, did not?? I have much more learning to do, maybe this year will be better for me, won’t be so wrapped up in clearing land, fretting over the snail like progress of the house, and then moving all those plants and roses. That has been a real trial, moving all those plants. The digging at the new place is like digging in cement. All of the soil has to be dug out and replaced with the good stuff ( 1/2 loam, 1/2 compost mix) it all takes so long to do. Guess our ages are catching up to us afterall. If you have any seeds to share this year, I would be more than happy to send you postage. As I said before, I had to prune off all my forming hips. Thank you again for all your help, encouragement and generosity.
Joan
Hi Joan
I’m sure you did everything right. Even if you varied a little from what others might do the seeds are usually very forgiving.
It’s possible they were subjected to too hot or too cold conditions while in the hands of the postal service, or any number of environmental conditions. I guess we’ll never know, but I think every year there is one or two batches of seeds that just simply won’t sprout for me, but the next year they perform just fine.
Don’t be too hard on yourself for failing with a couple batches of seeds, you’ll have better luck next time I’m sure.
I’m sure I can find some Op seeds from a few of my nicer seedlings to send you this fall, but it will be awhile yet.
Randy
Thanks again Randy. I will be waiting to hear from you as to when to send postage for the seeds. Oh, by the way, I did join RHA, sent my dues in and the cost of the hybridizer’s handbook last Friday. Everyone here seems very friendly and helpful, and as you know, I need help!
