Is this from a virus?

Is this caused by a virus? This is one of my yearlings and it is the only one that is like this. If this is from a virus then I’ll remove it ASAP, but if it’s just some weird varigation going on then I’ll keep it to see what happens.

What cross is it Paul?

I ask because it may give a clue… eg. striper?

Hi Paul,

How about if you send a sample to Ben Lockhart at the U of MN. There are 7 new rose viruses he has identified since 2005. I can give you the contact information for him if you would like or if you want to send a sample to me I can bring it to him. I enjoy going often and volunteering with him and his Ph.D. student Dimitre who is working on rose viruses.

Sincerely,

David

George,

It’s from a cross of (John Davis OP) OP x Grimaldi. I haven’t seen anything like this from either parent or from the other yearlings from this cross. It’s not on all of the canes either, just on the new shoots coming up from the base.

Thanks David that would be great if you could bring a sample to the U to have it evaluated. What kind of sample would be best?

Hi Paul,

It doesn’t look like a familiar virus to me, but I think that David’s offer sounds like a great opportunity to check for sure.

Hi David,

Has your friend looked with striped roses to see if there is any indication of a virus being involved with them? Perhaps an incomplete virus??? Sounds like very fun research!

Jim Sproul

Hi Jim!

That’s a really great idea to bring Ben some striped roses. One striped rose has a new rose virus, but a non-striped rose also has the same one too.

Hi Paul,

Is that from the John Davis op op I gave you? Some of the op’s from the JD op plant I raised and kept also showed varigation and a similar sort of thing. Actually they went downhill after that. I gave them to Ben and he couldn’t find virus. A shoot with some symptomatic leaves would be great. Ben typically tries to extract virus from the most symptomatic leaf tissue. If you sent me some very symptomatic leaves I would bring them to Ben.

David

Hi David,

Yes, the seed parent was the taller of the John Davis
