I should have added, that Gertrude has been a spectacular failure as a seed parent for me as well.
I managed to get one strong growing plant from its pollen. Still trying to get something from that seedling. Hyde Hall has produced several good plants as a seed parent. Not a lot of seeds or germinations to choose from, but at least strong growing plants with blooms I am looking for.

I should probably come clean by saying that some of my late-germinating seedlings from Gertie did actually grow out of their initial funk, which seemed for all the world like a genetic deformity at the time of my previous writing; I’m still scratching my head over it. I kept giving them dilute fertilizer, and I guess that (and time) did the trick. One of them spent the summer outside and is actually still alive and kicking and has even shown some vigor, which is no small feat given my climate/growing conditions.

As an aside, the correct pronunciation of the first syllable of Ms. Jekyll’s last name is quite different from that which we normally use for the fictional doctor’s character, at least here in the U.S. I wonder if that is also the case elsewhere.

Thankyou, kindly folk, for providing further insights for my dilemma. However, I have given up on both Gertie and TiE and invested (unwisely, I have discovered…) in Zephirine Drouhin - hardy/tall/fragrant/somewhat thornless,
Almost no offspring, virtually limited to sports. ![]()
You won’t believe it… The imposter, Take it Easy, is my first ever germination of my own crossings, with, of all things, Glauca (caninae)!
My strategies have been looking an absolute failure:
-hips picked since early March (southern hemisphere) through to mid July.
-so many stints in and out of the fridge
with continuous disappointment.
Congratulations (I think)! That’s an interesting cross.
How long did you keep your seeds in the fridge before you began cycling them out of it?
Stefan, thank you - I am moving this part of my Gertrude Jekyll topic to ‘First Germinations of 2025’ topic. I hope you won’t mind that I copy your comment there.
