Incidently… how did FDY fair in your recent freeze Paul
? My little own-root FDY has me a bit puzzled… It’s nice and warm… it’s in the ground, it’s got loads of manures/mulches etc around it… but it just doesn’t want to take off shrugs Wondering whether I will need to provide winter protection until it decides to grow???
Simon,
‘Fortune’s Double Yellow’ often suffers badly when we get hard freeze events here. It is never killed outright, but can often get killed to the soil line every few years. I moved it two years ago into one of the greenhouses and planted it in the floor, so it may have fared better this year. I can’t say that I’ve actually inspected it yet this year…I will go have a look when the sun comes up.
Thanks. I’m either going to regret planting this one in the ground one day or it will just fail to take off and die. A lot of these Teas and tea-like roses have been like this here and have taken years before they make their move. ‘Comtesse de Labarthe’ was a tiny 10cm struck cutting for three years (in the ground) before deciding to start growing this year. It has made up for this by growing strongly now and being a very cooperative seed parent
- hips forming on it now include ‘CdL’ x ‘Scabrosa’ and x ‘Abraham Darby’. I think I’ll pile some straw up arount it [FDY] over winter just to be on the safe side.
Simon,
I inspected my ‘Fortune’s Double Yellow’ yesterday and it appears to be quite dead. So much for FDY in my climate. I knew this day would come. Oh well! Several of its offspring survived, which matters more to me.
‘Comtesse de Labarthe’ is an easy seed parent. I wish it didn’t mildew.
Some seedlings can be clean but many must be culled. I’ve got a new generation of stuff coming out of it from last season. I probably won’t use it any longer.
Here is a photo of a first generation descendant taken yesterday. It’s a Tea, China, filipes, banksia hybrid.
DUBOLG1 is a remontant climber. Probably tender.
