Family Portrait

Here’s a photo of “Fa’s Marbled Moss” and some of her offspring. You can see why I want to broaden the palette! I should mention that I did touch up the colors a bit, the flowers on my screen now match the flowers in the baking dish, as well as I can make them.

The flowers are:

A. FMM x ?

B. ‘Henri Martin’ x FMM

C. “Fa’s Marbled Moss”

D. FMM x ?

E. FMM x ‘Golden Celebration’

F. 'Jon Singer, ‘Nightmoss’ x FMM

G. ‘Tuscany Superb’ x FMM

H. FMM x found Alba

I. ‘La Belle Sultane’ x FMM

J. oops, forgot J

K. FMM x Self? a little the worse for Cat Help

L. FMM x Self? “Papyrus”

M. Another FMM self also helped (or something by the cat)

N. “Tessellations”, FMM x ? (named for its leaves)

O. ‘Capitaine John Ingram’ x FMM

P. “Belle Organdy,” FMM x ?

Q. “Fa’s Marbled Moss.”

If anyone wants FMM pollen, let me know, I’ve got plenty. I realize it’s way late in the season for many of you, but hey…

Fara,

Wow! Floating the roses really helped to show them and also allowed everyone to compare them. Very nicely done…

I really like seeing the range of offspring all together in one image like this. Nice stuff you’re getting from FMM - I can see why you’re so excited about this line of breeding. And that “F” is so purple, wow!

I think my favorites would have to be D & F… before smelling anyways. Which have fragrance?

What a clever way to display your roses, very nice! “F” & “Q” are great looking roses but all of them are really nice. Thanks for sharing them with us.

I like D, G, and I. The photo is really awesome seeing the range of flowers.

Thanks everyone! As far as fragrance goes, the only one that has no fragrance I can detect is L. Most have a nice, loud fragrance, but ‘Jon Singer’ and “Fa’s Marbled Moss” will both knock you over. ‘Toujours Gai,’ another offspring which is a very late-season bloomer, has a really strong fragrance of, of all things, soap.

Very pretty–

I have a few openly pollinated seedlings of Paul’s Scarlet Nightmoss-- they’re very strong, but stressed out.

My thing is to crowd them, let them get sick… and hope one or two will survive. But they’re not dying.

I’m going to save one, but if you like-- you may have the rest. They have a nice variation of foilage too-- one is as glossy as Scarlet Nightmoss, and the others are more grey-green.

I have a feeling you will like them–

It’s not that hot right here, I could put them up and send them out. OR-- we could wait till it’s cold…

Enrique,

That’s very kind of you! But I’m confused. I know of Paul’s Nightmoss, which is purple, and Paul’s Scarlet Climber, which is red. I’d love either, but we should probably wait until it’s cold.

Can I put a request in, for the end of your season, to have some OP FMM seeds sent over to Australia? Pleeeeeeease? We don’t have ‘Alain Blanchard’ (some AB OP seeds would be awesome too if anyone is willing to send them), here and I don’t remember seeing any spotty ones at all… they are quite beautiful! I’m quite smitten

I’d be happy to send you some! Just send me your address and I’ll send hips. Actually, I have some hips left over from last year if you’d like those.

I would LOVE it… preparing an email as we speak

Scarlet Nightmoss is one of Paul’s hybrids, a cross between Nightmoss and Scarletmoss.

I’ve grown it for years, and it’s very beautiful and unique because of its very polished leaves-- but it looks like a gallica.

Paul had Uncommon Rose sent to me years ago… in 2001?

It produced tons of seeds last year, and many germinated.

It took time for it to establish… It was in a few tough areas before it got to a place that it really liked. It’s on my side of the fence infront of the lawn.

But, this year, the neighbors hacked at it and it hasn’t produced flowers at all. They’ve complained it was getting on their side of the garden, which is nonsense because I had the tied to the fence.

And their quince is growing on my side, but I don’t hack down at their tree because that would start a blood feud. Dumb things like that usually do…

It’s with hope that next year, they will remember my talk and hopefully-- Scarlet Nightmoss will bloom again.

Oh! I had no idea that was out there, and do humbly beg your pardon. Feuds over trees and fences are way too common, alas. But yes, if you ever have any that need homes, I’ll happily provide one.
