experience with R. setigera?

Is setigera more difficult to strike from cuttings than other species? I seem to be having trouble with it. I don’t know whether the cuttings I have are from male or female plants.

Has anyone had any luck using pollen from male plants on fertile diploids? I was thinking the dioecious habit is an excellent way to guarantee hybridity.

I can find only two F1 descendants where it is listed as being the pollen parent:

Rosa canina ‘Pollmer’: 'Pollmer'sche Unterlage' Rose

and

‘Therese Bauer’: 'Therese Bauer' Rose

The last one is interesting in that it shows it listed as a pollen parent twice (Seed: Hansa

Hi Simon!

I’m actually off today to stick cuttings of R. setigera. I haven’t had trouble in the past. I have tried male setigera pollen on polys and other roses too, but got nothing. I wonder if it was related to the clones I used or if it is generally universal. The pollen germinated great in assays and worked just fine crossed onto female R. setigera plants. Pollen from the same polys were accepted well by the female R. setigera plants.

I like the habit of R. setigera in how the flowers are borne too besides the foliage. I like that the clusters of flowers are widened out and kind of rounded on top. R. multiflora has more pointed pannicles like a lilac. The rounded flower display that can be transmitted in some offspring makes a nice rounded plant and floral display in repeat bloomers.
