Yesterday I received the Edmund’s Rose Catalog for 2012. In it were offering by several of our members. David Zlesak’s two Oso Happy roses(Candy Oh and Smoothie) are available. Jim Sproul’s Eyeconic roses (Lemonade and Pink Lemonade) and Thrive are available, and Brad Jalbert also has several offerings. I hope I haven’t missed anyone else. Congratulations to all of you. It is thrilling to see work by breeders in our organization getting recognition. http://www.edmundsroses.com/
The pictures are making me drool!
Thank you for the heads up Julie!! It is really fun to see them for sale and really available to people!! I’m really excited for your roses Jim and got my order in today before they are sold out!!
David,
I wasn’t able to find any info on your Oso Happy Smoothie on HMF. What can you tell us about that one. It’s a very pretty rose. Congratulations on getting her to market!
Rob
Hi Rob!
Thank you!!! It is not officially registered yet. It’s a diploid that has Rosa setigera as a great grandmother and polyanthas in the rest of the pedigree. Rosa setigera seems to have led to the little larger bloom size compared to the polys in its background. The margins are nice on the petals for color. Rosa setigera changes the clustering too a little bit. Instead of a more elongated panicle like the more R. multiflora based polys, the cluster of blooms is somewhat rounded like R. setigera, giving the whole plant an overall more rounded appearance as it flowers around the perimeter. The stems are near thornless from the polys in the background and there are still prickles on the petioles.
This was one of the more cane hardy ones from the cross and larger flowered ones. It sets lots of hips that turn a nice orange in the fall.
Congratulations to you guys for getting your roses released. It
Thank you David for the information. It sounds and looks like a lovely rose and the parentage is very interesting. Congrats to you for your Oso Happy introductions and to Jim Sproul for his Eyeconic Series intros.
Hi,
Sorry for the caps. Went on Edmunds to see your new roses and read the descriptions, carefully earlier today. Just went on and rechecked.
Lovely roses by the way; you should both be proud. The descriptions state they are highly resistant clearly. Yet underneath, where they give a summation of the rose, under resistance, it says
Resistance ?; NO
I was going to email them since I knew in earlier threads on RHA you had mentioned their resistance. I didn’t know how to contact them but I wanted to bring it to your attention. Other roses were marked YES but others which were described as being resistant were also marked NO in the summation.
I think this is working against the sale of your roses so wanted to bring this to your attention. Sorry to all if I am out of line in bringing this up here but I wanted to bring this to Jim’s and David’s attention ASAP since I feel this might be working against their sales.
Jim
Jim,
I don’t think it’s out of line at all to bring it up. I’d want to know if it were me that had roses being shown in a catalog. Good observation.
Rob
Just another example of non gardening people writing gardening information and not paying attention. Wini would never have let something like that slip. Kim
Edmunds’ Roses is owned by Jung Seed Company. Edmunds’ website seemingly is done by the same people who do Jung’s website. The product page layout is the same on both sites.
Two years ago I noticed that the information in the motivational description for Harison’s Yellow (misspelled as Harisons Yellow–no apostrophe) did not fully match what was in the Product Details section. I told the people at Jung about several errors.
FWIW, the page was never corrected.
According to the product details on that page this evening, HY grows to a height of 5-6’ and a width of 0" (slim chance of that, right?), and is not disease resistant. You can check this at the link below (and compare product page layouts if you wish to keep one of your browser’s tabs open at one of the Edmunds’ pages).
Rhetorical question alert–
Just wondering–if you grow Harison’s Yellow, does it smell like licorice to you?

David, did you use setigera serena for thornlessness? Nice roses. And Jim, it’s wonderful to see your hulthemias in commerce.
Congrats to all!
Here is a very revealing interview of Jung’s owner.

Thank you Jim and Peter for pointing out the information in their catalog that doesn’t match, make sense,… I sent them a message through their contact us link. Hopefully they’ll update things. It sounds like from Peter’s experience, we shouldn’t get our hopes up.
I’m really excited to have a plant of Serena now that is growing in size to breed with hopefully this next season. The R. setigera parent of Oso Happy Smoothie has prickles. Over the generations and on both sides of the pedigree there were thornless polys and eventually thornlessness was recovered.
Hi Julie,
Thank you for your mentioning this, and thanks to all for the kind and thoughtful comments.
Congratulations David on your introductions! For me the most fun is knowing that others are growing roses that I had the first chance to see growing as brand new seedlings. I get a real kick out of knowing that roses find their way into the full demographic spectrum, from rich to poor. Roses do not discriminate.
Jim Sproul
I think Ketchup and Mustard belong on the balcony for 2012. I like the pedigree and color of Whimsy, but, in general, new miniatures scare me. I already own Louise Hay. I should use it in breeding with Buck roses. It sets huge hips.
Happy New Year all!
Received Jung’s catalog the other day and was so pleased to see Jim Sproul’s Eyeconic roses, Lemonade and Pink Lemonade for sale. The description DOES mention disease resistance in the ad. Guess they got it right this time
Jim P
I stopped by McShanes Nursery in Salinas, California to see what roses they have for the new garden. I was surprised to see Jim Sproul’s Eyeconic Lemonade and Pink Lemonade. Only one of the roses had blooms on it, but that one bloom was beautiful. I bought copies of both. It’s nice to see folks here having some success with their breeding programs on a commercial level. Congrats Jim.
Edmunds now has eyeconics on sale: buy both for $18.95.
Dave, is that $18.95 each or for the two. If it is for 2 that is very cheap. If it is for one, compared to our new introductions, again good value I reckon.
