Zinnia mildew does not affect roses. It is the same with rust on hollyhocks. It is different than the rust on roses and does not affect them and vice versa.

Are you sure?
I’ve noticed that about Knock Out and considered trying a cross between it and this line of crested seedlings. I’ve succeeded in virtually eliminating the mildew from my seedling line. I fear reintroducing it through Knock Out. That’s the main issue with KO here.
Well, it will be clean here! Maybe a few seedlings on the side, to see what will happen, but you know better than me. Knock out is self-sterile here, though. The few hips that formed are fat and on the clusters closest to aother rose. A few good ones are ripening next to an unidentified Portland, somehow I am excited!
Why I want to breed multiflora and allies into crested roses:
Ballerina X R. filipes → 'Ballerina X R. filipes' Rose
Anyone have experience with filipes? Rippetoe has a nice hybrid with it… (OLGHERXOLG)
For someone in a colder climate where the rose may remain smaller, Dr. Jackson might be worth exploring. 'Dr. Jackson' Rose Photo
That is fantastic. Look at the size of it… Nice hips, too
